Things to do

If you've earned some money or have the day off, what is there to do? While Kyoto is by no means a metropolis, there are plenty of ways to amuse yourself.

In this part, we haven't mentioned temples or shrines, given that they are covered comprehensively in travel guide books. In their place this section has details of bars, restaurants, sports and even cooking classes. As time goes on there will be more content, so keep checking back. Finally, if anyone has any recommendations, post them in the forum, or they can be e-mailed directly to us.

Going out Various ways to spend an evening out, or a day off. Some of them are similar to places back home, while others are distinctly Japanese.

Eating out Japan has a wide range of restaurants, many of which are competitively priced. Understanding menus however, can cause a bit of a headache. Take a look at this section for help.

Sport Information on various team and individual sports.

Films As well as cinemas, this section deals with places to rent foreign, subtitled videos and DVDs.

BooksWant something to read on the long commute into work? You'll find places to buy books in here.

Cooking classes Want to find out how to make authentic Japanese food?
