Universal Studios Japan
Located in the Osaka Bay area, USJ is an almost exact replica of the park in America. As you step out of JR Universal City station, and make your way to the main gate, you get a taste of what to expect inside. Strolling past the unmistakable giant globe, emblazoned with the Universal logo, it's hard not to think you've been whisked to the original place in Florida. If you ignore the Osakan skyline behind, the throngs of Japanese people and all the signs in kanji, of course.
Once you've paid the 5500 yen entrance fee and picked up a map (available in English), you are greeted by a faux American promenade and various characters that are part of the Universal family. Along this first street are a plethora of souvenir shops that sell the usual assortment of edible and fluffy presents. It's a good place to pick up some last minute gifts on your way out. Once out of this glorified shopping arcade, you get to the park proper.
Amusement parks live and die by their rides and attractions. In my opinion USJ does pretty well in this department. Spider-Man, Jurassic Park and Back To The Future are designed along the traditional lines of quickening the pulse and providing all the thrills you would want. On the other hand the 4D experiences of Shrek and Sesame Street, 4D basically means 3D cinema with a few extras, are refreshing and good wholesome fun. In addition the live shows like Waterworld and Backdraft provide some drama. While I don't believe that USJ offers enough to stand up to repeated visits, it does have more than enough things to keep you entertained for at least a couple of visits. In addition if you avoid weekends and National Holidays, there can be little to no queues, ensuring you get your moneys worth.
In addition, as mentioned before, you get the surreal experience of stepping into America while still being in Japan. This is added to by the numerous "authentic" American diners and restaurants. There are pizzerias, burger joints and grills. The price you pay for the food you get may be a little high but it all adds to the occasion of going to a theme park. If you are on a budget, buying food and drink before you go will work out cheaper.
USJ is a theme park, if you enjoy theme parks you will enjoy USJ, and even if you don't there are parades, and shows to keep you entertained. Both as a destination for a date and a fun day out USJ delivers. For more information visit the website.
